A day in Colombo

Colombo is a vibrant city, and to many people it's the first gateway when arriving in Sri Lanka. While you might be eager to travel on to the beautiful beaches or other picturesque places in the country, it's worth to spend at least a day in Colombo. The best way to get around the city is by tuk-tuk or taxi. You can hire a driver for a few hours (at very little cost) who can also be your local guide.

Colombo was once home to Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British settlements, making up the multi-cultural city it is today! You can find churches, mosques and temples all along one single street. A city with an open mind! Get ready to indulge in Sri Lanka's culture while exploring some of the key landmarks in Colombo.

Things to do in Colombo

1. Gangaramaya Temple

The Gangaramaya Temple is the most popular sight in Colombo – and rightfully so. It’s one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the city, from the late 19th century, where you can find a fascinating mix of Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai, and Indian architecture in one place. Give yourself some time to explore the different structures and sculptures composed of 2 floors. It also houses a museum and library. 2. Seema Malakaya

Seema Malakaya is part of the Gangaramaya temple complex, a few minutes walk from the main buildings. This assembly hall for monks is beautifully embedded in the Beira Lake, giving a great sense of peace and relaxation. One of the highlights is the Bodhi Tree with its heart-shaped leaves which is a sacred symbol of Buddhism. You can also find many seated Buddha statues all around the complex while each corner displays a shrine dedicated to different Hindu Gods. In addition, you have great views of the Colombo skyline from here as well.

3. Beira Lake

The Beira Lake is located in the heart of Colombo. Its name derives from the Portuguese settlers, and with its bendy shape you can enjoy it from many places throughout the city. If you have enough time, take a walk along the water which provides great photo opportunities. You have some beautiful views of the lake from Linear Park, close to the newly built Lotus Tower.

4. Colombo Lotus Tower

The Lotus Tower is a brand-new attraction in Colombo, the city’s new iconic landmark! With a height of 350m, it’s the 2nd tallest structure in South Asia and it ranks within the 20 tallest towers in the world. There is an observation deck at 244 meters above ground and a revolving restaurant 235 meters up in the air. The tower has opened its doors to the public in the fall of 2019 so I haven’t had a chance to visit the observation deck yet, but it’s definitely on top of the list for my next visit… and I hope it will be on yours, too! 5. Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam

The temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo, dedicated to the gods Shiva and Ganesha. It perfectly reflects Indian architecture with its impressive and very colorful carvings. There are two magnificent towers at the entrance, but once you walk inside you’ll be captured by the spiritual atmosphere all around. Don’t miss to walk towards the left side, outside of the temple, which gives another amazing view of the shining colors and the beautiful little details everywhere.

6. Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo, rising up over street vendors and local shops on a very bustling street. With its red and white “candy” facade it’s surely a tourist magnet. Make sure to locally check the opening hours and be sure there are no Muslim prayer days when you visit because they will not allow tourists during that time. If you are not dressed appropriately, a cape is provided at the entrance.

7. Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green feels like a great little getaway right in the city! It is Colombo’s largest urban park that stretches along the waterfront. Take a stroll at the beach, grab some fresh food from the street vendors and relax on the lawn among many families, indulging in the local life. Nothing better to review this wonderful day while the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.

Know before you go!

The best way to get around is by tuk-tuk taxi. You can flag them anywhere on the street and they are very cheap compared to Western standards. Be sure to negotiate a price with the driver ahead of time – but be mindful that you may be negotiating with someone who can feed an entire family with just a $1 more. If you hire a driver for several hours, don’t forget to give a generous tip since the driver usually serves as your tour guide as well!

From the most known hotel brands to the hippest AirBNB apartments, you can find many opportunities to sleep comfortably in Colombo. Generally I find it difficult to provide the “best” places to stay in a city because everyone has different needs. So I am suggesting what worked for me – which was The Ramada by Wyndham Colombo Hotel. It’s a bit of a pricier option but very spacious and clean, and it’s in a fantastic location, right by the waterfront. You can easily access all major sights only a brief tuk-tuk ride away.
